High School Athletics Roundup: Dominant Performances in Basketball and Swimming, Grassfield Wrestlers Triumph
This past week in high school sports saw outstanding individual and team performances across basketball, swimming, and wrestling events in the region.

(NewsNibs) - Norfolk Collegiate's boys' basketball team claimed victory with significant contributions from players Khalil Caple, who netted 15 points, and Brennan Chatman, who added 12 points. Justin Burrough impressed with a double-double, recording 11 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Joshua Mills provided a spark off the bench with 11 points. In another matchup, Davion Riddick led Indian River with an all-around performance of 23 points, four rebounds, six assists, and three steals, helping his team to a win. DJ Lassiter shined for the Hurricanes with a game-high 26 points. Several other notable basketball performances included Zymareon Mitchell of Booker T. Washington with 19 points, 10 assists, and five steals, and game MVP Carmelo Swinson who scored 23 points alongside six rebounds and six assists. Nansemond River also pulled off a decisive quarter, outscoring Denbigh 17-3, driven by Izzy Lewis with 11 points and Landon Ames's contribution of eight points, three steals, and three rebounds.
Distinguished Swimmers and Team Success
In swimming, Colin Barakey, Evan Vinarov, Tommy Blackburn, and Zach McNabb secured individual event victories. The female swimmers were not to be outdone. Hickory's Abby Maniace triumphed in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, while Western Branch's Maggie Gahagan secured first place in the 200 and 400 freestyles. Annalise Iniguez of the Hornets also claimed top spots in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
Grassfield Wrestling Team Scores Victory
The Grassfield High wrestling team emerged as the dominant force at the Northeastern High’s tournament, scoring 290.5 points and claiming first place. They showcased their depth by winning eight weight classes and having numerous other wrestlers place highly. Matox Allen, who was crowned Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, led winners that included Leland Mendez, Luca Schinelli, Nick Moore, Nate Moore, Hunter Johnson, Brady Greene, and Chase Burns. Grassfield's wrestling success was bolstered by the second-place finishes of Daniel Cadua, Christian Johnson, and Chris Funches, while Eston Castillo and Colton Jones both achieved third in their classes. In the girls' division, Grassfield's Sam Jurgens stood out with a first-place finish at 114 pounds.
