(NewsNibs) - The Salt Manufacturers Association of Pakistan (SMAP) has highlighted an urgent situation where rising freight charges have put the sustainability of the country's salt exports in jeopardy. The industry, which relies on affordable and efficient shipping to meet international demand, has been hard-hit by the rapid escalation of costs. In response, the association has called on the government for prompt intervention to curtail volatility in shipping expenses and to ensure the industry's operations remain viable.
Calls for Strategic Solutions
The Interim Chairman of SMAP, Qasim Yaqoob Paracha, has termed the current scenario as an "extraordinary crisis" and addressed the need for a comprehensive governmental response. SMAP has proposed several solutions, including the provision of incentives to salt exporters and the enhancement of the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation's (PNSC) capabilities. By increasing its capacity and offering competitive freight rates, the PNSC could be instrumental in addressing the distress within the industry.
Further, it has been suggested that the stabilization of the sector might be achieved by the national shipping lines increasing their fleet and offering services on the troubled routes. The move could serve as a temporary measure to mitigate the impact of the global shipping turmoil. Paracha has also appealed to the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, and other relevant authorities to take cognizance of the severity of the issue and take decisive steps to protect the industry.
Urgent Measures Required for Survival
The survival of Pakistan's salt export sector hangs in the balance, calling for decisive and immediate actions to rescue it from the brunt of the shipping crisis. Industry leaders advocate that without constructive government intervention, the longstanding salt export business risks a collapse, potentially impacting the economy and livelihoods associated with the trade. Stakeholders await governmental action that would navigate the industry through these challenging times and position it towards a more stable and prosperous future.
