(NewsNibs) - The Salt Manufacturers Association of Pakistan (SMAP) is raising its voice against the soaring costs that are straining the salt exporters in the country. In response to the issues obstructing the Red Sea trade routes, which have led to increased shipping expenses, SMAP is pressing the Pakistani government to take immediate action. The association has openly called for the stabilization of freight charges, emphasizing the urgency of the situation for the industry's sustainability.
Urgent Call for Government Intervention
The crisis has prompted Qasim Yaqoob Paracha, the Acting Chairman of SMAP, to highlight the severity of the circumstances facing salt exporters. Paracha describes the situation as an 'extraordinary crisis' requiring a comprehensive intervention from the federal government. SMAP is rallying for the provision of concessions to the exporters in an attempt to mitigate the financial strain. Moreover, the association recommends that the government-owned Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) improve its service offerings to provide competitive rates which could act as a relief for the salt exporters during this critical period.
SMAP has been forthright in emphasizing the pivotal role of national shipping lines. It suggests that an increase in the number of ships in the fleet and the temporary prioritization of the affected routes could serve as a significant measure in alleviating the strain on the salt export industry. In pursuit of immediate recourse, SMAP is calling upon federal ministers responsible for Maritime Affairs, Trade, and other relevant authorities, demanding concerted action to aid the beleaguered industry.
The plight of Pakistan's salt exporters has become an emblem of the broader challenges faced by national trade under strained logistics and increased operational costs. SMAP warns that without decisive governmental action, the future of the nation's salt export industry is in jeopardy, underlining the essential need for intervention to ensure the industry's continuity and contribution to the economy.
