(NewsNibs) - Following the birth of triplets, a family living in Rango village within the Karama sector of Kazo district, Ngoma region, has received a cow as a token of support from the Rwandan government. The family expressed deep gratitude to President Paul Kagame, crediting their strengthened livelihood to the country’s leadership. With farming and casual labor as their primary source of income, the addition of the cow is significant for the family. Before the arrival of their triplets, the family had two daughters, aged 12 and 7, and faced the need to sell their small livestock to provide for the newborns. The eight-month pregnant cow is expected to provide much-needed milk for the two-month-old babies, enhancing the family's subsistence resources.
Community and District Support
The local community and officials from Ngoma district have rallied to support the family with practical assistance. This notably includes covering their medical debt totalling 100,000 Rwandan Francs as well as supplying them with essential hygiene products, milk, and food. Deputy Mayor Mapambano Nyiridandi Cyriaque, tasked with economic development in the district, has highlighted the broader reach of assistance this fiscal year, aiming to donate 329 cows, 246 of which have already been distributed – 82 in the previous week alone. Each cow provided comes at a cost of 700,000 Rwandan Francs and is accompanied by insurance, veterinary care and necessary supplements - a testament to the district's commitment to fostering livestock development among its citizens.
Prospects for the Family and the Girinka Program
The district has also promised to construct a new house for Mutungirehe's family, who now count five daughters. Encouragement from the government is strong for citizens to take proper care of the gifted livestock, as these acts of support are integral to the community's and nation's advancement, echoing the goals of the government's fast-track development initiative, NST1. Since its inception in 2006, the Girinka program has been a beacon of empowerment in the Ngoma district, with 12,460 cows distributed thus far, playing a pivotal role in alleviating poverty and improving nutrition among rural communities.
The family’s turn of fortune exemplifies the transformative impact of Rwanda's development strategies on individual lives, echoing the broad success of the Girinka program nationally. As the family, now of seven, looks towards a brighter future with their new source of sustenance and forthcoming housing, the nation too watches on as the program continues to evolve and improve the wellbeing of its citizens.
