(NewsNibs) - The Czech Republic's Interior Minister Vít Rakušan has urged mayors across the country to abstain from organizing traditional New Year's Eve fireworks displays. This request comes shortly after a series of tragic events that have shaken the nation, prompting officials to seek ways to minimize public distress. Minister Rakušan has also advocated for the general public to limit their use of recreational pyrotechnics during the upcoming celebrations.
Response to Prague Shooting
The plea from the minister is in direct response to a horrifying shooting spree at Charles University's Faculty of Philosophy in Prague, which claimed the lives of 14 individuals. Additionally, there was a related violent incident in the Klánovice forest, which resulted in a double murder. Authorities have linked both crimes to the same individual, who committed suicide post the atrocities. These events have cast a shadow over the festive period, leading to calls for a more subdued end to the year from government officials.
Olomouc Leads in Heeding Call
The Olomouc city council has already responded positively to the Interior Minister's appeal by canceling its planned fireworks display. The decision was influenced not just by the shooting, but also due to a separate hydrological concern that warranted the attention of the flood commission. The city intends to orchestrate the fireworks at a later date, considering early June, aligned with city celebrations, as a possibility for the rescheduled event.
Grim Details and Aftermath
On December 21, a 24-year-old student from Central Bohemia entered the university's Faculty of Philosophy, unleashing a deadly attack that led to 13 immediate fatalities and leaving another victim to succumb to their injuries in the hospital. A further 25 people were injured, some severely. This same student was connected to the murders of a man and his two-month-old daughter in the Klánovice forest that occurred six days earlier. Following the shooting, the Czech newspaper Deník N reported the discovery of a letter in the shooter's residence, confessing to the Klánovice murders. As the republic grapples with these tragic incidents, this New Year's Eve is set to be a period of reflection and mourning rather than celebration.
