(NewsNibs) - On December 25, 2023, a 21-year-old man was detained on Vava’u Island, Tonga, after swimming in the sea on Christmas Day, which is prohibited by local laws. The individual had been previously arrested on the preceding Tuesday for violating these government restrictions. Vava Lapota, a relative of the detainee, was called upon by the police to provide bedding for the incarcerated family member.
Law Enforcement During Festivities
The duty officer who spoke to Vava Lapota explained the need to jail his relative to file a report, citing insufficient staff during the holiday. Although Lapota noted several officers at the station, he raised concerns about the selective enforcement of the law, contrasting his family member's punishment with uninterrupted operations, like those of Lulutai airline, on the same day. The national regulations restrict various activities including swimming, sports, and loud music on Sundays, which also extend to Christmas Day and Good Friday, barring any emergencies officially sanctioned by the police minister.
Holiday Season Incidents Across the Pacific
Elsewhere in the Pacific, health and safety concerns arose as two children were isolated at a Samoan hospital after showing COVID-19 symptoms, while a New Zealand man tragically drowned in a perilous Cook Islands swimming spot. In addition to these incidents, the government employees in the Northern Mariana Islands were reminded by the Office of the Public Auditor to refrain from accepting gifts during festive times, in adherence to laws meant to avoid legal infractions.
Regional Safety Measures and Precautions
Karla Eggelton, Director of Cook Islands Tourism, acknowledged efforts to educate visitors on the dangers of swimming in places like Avaavaroa, a site notorious for previous drowning accidents. Warning signs are present, and new regulations are anticipated to be in force within the next year or so. The recent issues underscore the challenges faced by the Pacific island nations in balancing cultural practices, safety regulations, and enforcement, particularly during holiday seasons when activities peak and resources may be limited.
