(NewsNibs) - The Forest Preserve District of Will County has ceased its Christmas tree collection program. In lieu of a centralized district-wide effort, numerous townships within Will County are offering alternative services, which include curbside collection for recycling and composting of trees. Residents are required to verify with their respective local municipality to understand specific details of available Christmas tree services.
Alternative Disposal and Recycling Opportunities
Where available, municipalities may process recycled trees into mulch, which might be obtainable by the community during spring. For those without access to these services, it is recommended to save the trees until spring yard waste collection commences. Trees should be cut into smaller sections and can be bagged or placed in containers designated for yard waste. However, undecorated Christmas trees can be repurposed as wildlife shelters when stored outside, and residents may choose to adorn these trees with bird-friendly treats or hang bird feeders.
Post-Christmas Trees: Usage and Precautions
Christmas trees, especially evergreens, are known for their quick and hot burning characteristics, making them suitable as outdoor firewood. Prior to burning, these trees should be allowed to dry for several months. Furthermore, the ashes from burnt Christmas trees are rich in lime and potassium, serving as viable garden fertilizer. Those with a creative streak may also use evergreen branches, provided they still bear green needles, to craft winter decorations. Additionally, Will County offers a recycling program for non-functional holiday string lights at three locations until January 31, with year-round recycling at electronic drop-off sites. It should be noted that only string lights are eligible for recycling, and other types of lights are not accepted.
Recycling Recommendations and Reminders
Residents are encouraged to participate in these alternative recycling options to ensure an environmentally friendly disposal of their Christmas trees. The Will County initiatives underscore the importance of adapting to changes in community services and the benefit of flexible, localized solutions for environmental conservation.
