(NewsNibs) - In a significant move towards sustainable development, the People's Bank of Sri Lanka has taken a green step by providing solar power solutions to seven schools across the country. This initiative is conducted under the bank's 'People's Service' program, aimed at contributing to community welfare and adhering to responsible environmental practices. The beneficiary education institutions now enjoy the independence and sustainability of electricity generated through solar panels, providing an uninterrupted power supply to support the schools' daily operations.
Empowering Education
Recipient schools of this project include a diverse range of institutions from various regions, such as Meemure Galamuduna Kanishta Vidyalaya, Meegahakiwula Kalukale Kanishta Vidyalaya, amongst many others. These schools have historically faced challenges due to their remote locations, which often led to a lack of reliable electricity. Now equipped with solar technology, the schools are a testament to the People's Bank's commitment to nurturing the educational environment through clean energy.
The initiative, heralded as the initial phase of the broader 'People's Service' program, was launched by the bank last year as part of its series of community service efforts. People's Bank Chairman Sujeewa Rajapaksha underscores the bank's seven-decade legacy of consistent public service in the financial sector, emphasizing a deep understanding and connection with the Sri Lankan populace's everyday experiences.
A Future Brightened by Solar Power
With soaring electricity costs, the solar power project brings substantial relief to the schools' operational budgets. Klyv Fonsceca, the Chief Administrative Officer/General Manager of the People's Bank, adds that while aiding the schools in educational needs is imperative, promoting environmental stewardship through sustainable energy use is equally significant. The bank envisions the continuation of the 'People's Service' initiative with more community-oriented projects in the near future, thereby strengthening its role as a socially and ecologically responsible institution.
