(NewsNibs) - The Gampaha cricket team clinched the title in the Western Province Inter-Club Second Level one-day cricket tournament after defeating Kirindiwela Central Sports Club. The much-anticipated final match took place at the Colombo Ananda College Sports Ground, drawing a considerable crowd of cricket enthusiasts. Gampaha's victory was determined using the Duckworth-Lewis method, a mathematical formulation designed to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited-overs cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstances.
Match Progression
Kirindiwela Central, who batted first in the final, managed a total of 127 runs before being bowled out in 31.4 overs. The Gampaha team, responding to the modest target set by their opponents, found their innings curtailed by rain. Play was stopped after 20 overs, with Gampaha at 117/5. Despite the disruption, Gampaha was ahead of the par score according to the Duckworth-Lewis method, which ultimately led to their win.
Standout Performance
Asintha Malshan, Gampaha's top-scoring batsman, played a significant role in the team's success. Scoring a brisk 60 runs from just 52 deliveries, Malshan's performance was instrumental in propelling his team towards the win. His contribution with the bat earned him the player of the match accolade, a recognition of his pivotal innings during the rain-affected match.
Celebrations for Gampaha were in order as they emerged as the champions of the tournament. The win underscored their dominance in the second-level one-day cricket circuit within the Western Province. Both teams showed commendable sportsmanship and cricketing skills throughout the tournament, but it was Gampaha's day to lift the trophy as they walked away with the much-deserved win, amidst the cheer of their supporters and the acknowledgment of their peers.
