(NewsNibs) - Stancilous Rovani, a musician based in Harare, is facing financial difficulties as his singing career has not been generating sufficient income. His ability to provide for his three children has been significantly impacted due to a scarceness of live performance opportunities. Victoria Shonhiwa, who brought the case to court, has requested that Rovani pay US$300 per month for child support. Rovani, however, contends that the lack of shows has forced him to start a side business selling face powder at the local Mbare market to make ends meet.
Request for Custody Modification Rejected
During the court proceeding, Rovani proposed caring for one of his three children while Shonhiwa retains custody of the other two. This suggestion was met with opposition. The reason for this resistance may stem from an earlier episode where Shonhiwa had entrusted Rovani with one child but retracted the responsibility citing poor treatment of the child. A neighbor had raised concerns to Shonhiwa, urging her to take the child back.
Court Ruling on Child Support
Rovani has offered to pay US$50 monthly and contribute towards school fees when possible. Despite his financial difficulties, the presiding judge, Ayanda Dhlamini, has ruled that Rovani must pay an increased amount of US$70 per month. Beyond the monetary support, Rovani has also been charged with the duty of ensuring that the children attend school.
The case reflects the challenges faced by some artists struggling to balance their careers and parental responsibilities. In this instance, the court's decision attempts to address the immediate needs of the children while considering the father's current financial capacity.
