(NewsNibs) - The Ukrainian Air Force reported that on the night of December 27, the country was subjected to a significant drone attack involving 46 Shahed-136/131 strike drones. These drones originated from Balaklava in occupied Crimea and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in the Krasnodar region of Russia. The attacks took place in several waves between the hours of 19:00 on December 26 and 03:50 on December 27. The Ukrainian military's response included deploying tactical aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, and mobile fire groups to counter the aerial assault.
Efficient Defense Operations
Ukrainian defenders successfully neutralized 32 of the enemy's unmanned strike drones. The aerial defense operations spanned several regions, including Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, and Kirovograd. Despite these efforts, the drones that managed to evade destruction predominantly targeted frontline areas, with the Kherson region bearing the brunt of the impact. Some drones fell to the ground without causing damage or casualties.
Consequences Amidst Conflict
The strike coincides with an attack the previous day when Russian forces shelled a railway station in Kherson while approximately 140 civilians were awaiting an evacuation train. As of now, there have been no details released regarding casualties or the extent of damage from this attack. In a broader military context, military analyst Petro Chernik speculates that with the recent destruction of Russia’s landing ship "Novocherkassk," Russian forces might have lost an estimated two thousand Shahed strike drones. Moreover, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have reportedly destroyed 20% of Russia's Black Sea Fleet within the last four months, dealing a significant blow to the Russian naval capabilities.
Ukraine's Steadfast Defense Continues
Despite the relentless attacks, Ukraine's defense systems have demonstrated a considerable degree of resilience and effectiveness. The persistence of Ukrainian defenders in intercepting and neutralizing a large number of these aerial threats underlines the ongoing challenges and the intensity of the conflict in the region. The situation remains volatile, with further developments expected as both Ukraine and Russia continue to engage in this protracted conflict.
