Serobiddin Poziljonovich Ismoilov, who served as the governor of Izbuskan district in Andijan region, is now in custody following allegations of crime under Uzbekistan's criminal code. The Andijan city court took up the case upon a request by the regional deputy prosecutor to action against Ismoilov. The ex-governor faces suspected charges under Article 205 Part 2 "a" for abuse of power or official authority, as well as charges under Article 229-4 Parts 2 "a" and "b" regarding the violation in the procedure for issuing land.
Court Authorizes Detention
The legal process moved forward on December 21 when the city court sanctioned the detention request put forth by the deputy prosecutor. Following the court's decision, Ismoilov was placed into an investigation detention facility. This procedure was conducted in compliance with Article 221, outlining the grounds for detention under the nation's Criminal-Procedural Code.
Background of the Case
The allegations follow closely on the heels of Ismoilov's dismissal from his gubernatorial post on December 10, a move that took place during a session with the participation of Shuhrat Abdurahmonov, the regional governor. Ismoilov had been appointed as the governor of the Izbuskan district back in 2018. His tenure ended abruptly amidst the aforementioned allegations which have now led to his detention.
The case is significant, as it highlights the ongoing issues of governance and rule of law in the region. The government has not yet provided comments on the case, and the former governor is expected to have legal representation for the ensuing trial. The details of the case remain under scrutiny as the investigation continues.
