Brazilian Coastal Destinations Dominate Holiday Travel Preferences, Reveals ViajaNet Study

Filed under: Tourism, News from Brazil

(NewsNibs) - A study by the online travel agency ViajaNet has revealed Brazil’s coastal destinations as the favorites among Brazilians for celebrating Christmas and the New Year. The report, examining holiday package sales from December 23rd to January 1st, highlights a trend for cost-effective domestic travel, with this year seeing a record number of domestic flight passengers since 2015. According to ViajaNet's CMO, Daniely de Oliveira, there's a growing desire to explore one's own country, with consumers booking early and searching for the best deals, which in turn boosts hotel occupancy.

A significant 60% of holidaymakers chose seaside spots for their end-of-year festivities, with the national coastline featured prominently among the preferred destinations, geared toward those looking to escape December's heat and participate in traditions like the New Year’s Eve ritual of jumping over seven waves.

The survey indicates that northeast beaches have captured the hearts of travelers, with Porto de Galinas in Pernambuco and Natal in Rio Grande do Norte taking the top two spots and constituting 16% of tourism package sales. Despite the tropical allure, a notable 5% of travelers opted for the wintery charm of New York City, ranking it third in preference for holiday excursions.

Within Brazilian borders, the pursuit of cooler climates and festive extravaganzas leads to Gramado, a city renowned for its Christmas spectacle, which ties with New York at 5%. The enchantment of pristine beaches continues to resonate, with Rio de Janeiro, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and Riviera Maya in Mexico each securing 5% of the travel sales.

Further down the list is Ilhéus in Bahia, known for having the longest stretch of coastline in the state, and attracting 4% of holiday bookings. In seventh place at 4% is Buenos Aires, Argentina's vibrant capital, while the South American list is rounded off by Foz do Iguaçu in Paraná, home to the famous Iguazu Falls, which holds the tenth spot. The findings reflect a blend of traditional beach vacations and the appeal of urban and snowcapped escapes, diversifying the festive travel aspirations of Brazilian tourists.
